As well as being the member of Parliament for Bishop Auckland Mrs Goodman was appointed Deputy Leader of the House of Commons in Gordon Brown's new government in June 2007.

When away from her parliamentary duties Helen resides in Barney.

The Northern Echo reported Mrs Goodman as saying:
"We are all tremendously indebted to the Royal Mail staff, who work incredibly hard so that we can enjoy our cards and presents."
